Amalfi - The Valley of the Foundries, Full Itinerary

There are not so many places in the world famous as the Valley of the Foundries (Valle delle Ferriere) in Amalfi, Italy. It's impossible that you go in vacation in Amalfi Coast and did not hear about it. It's like the Path of the Gods, the must to visit for everybody who loves nature, mountains, trekking.

There are many ways to visit this valley, some of them are very easy (from Pomerano) or very easy (from Amalfi), but if you like more exciting walks, even EE++, you will go down from S.Lazzaro to Amalfi. You can reach S.Lazzaro with an autobus from different places. From Amalfi, too.

There are different possibilities to begin your walk from S.Lazzaro. Here are some photos of our last trekking some days ago.

S.Lazzaro, the beginning of the path

This second photo is very important. Here you can choose your way. If you go left, the staircases are hard, but they are clear and easy to follow. If you go left - and you will see this itinerary in this post, you will avoid the stairs, but the path is wild.
Both Right and Left guide you to Amalfi - The Valley of the Foundries

As you can see on my photos, the pathes have all kinds of signs. The path is cured by CAI and is very popular, so you can meet groups of persons everywhere.

The cascades begin. There are many, really many of them long all the path.
I think, the photos speak for themselves, it's not necessary add the words that can't describe the beauty of this favolous Creation.

Look at the map or at the signs when you go long the path. There are different deviations to the cascades. You have to leave the main path, go to the end of the gorge and turn back to the main path. This is valid both for High Valley and Low Valley.

Last part of the path is an old street with the ruins of the foundries. There are different little taverns organized by local families. I think, it's possible to sleep there, too. But you are only some steps from Amalfi and if you continue your way, you can stay overnight in a "regular" hotel. The prices you can see CLICKING HERE - I personaly use this site always when I have to book a hotel because I like their excellent customer service.

So, the street guiding you to Amalfi is new, good and easy.
If you followed the itinerary I described here, you have walked about 18 km-s to reach Amalfi, so the easy way relieves not too much.

Amalfi, always full of the tourists, is a very hectic town. There is not one season when you can find it not so busy. The prices are at least 3 times higher than in outside of the Amalfi Coast. But the best of this town are it's residents. They are really good persons. I love to visit Amalfi for it's people. I speak with them, ask about their life - and they have very hard life, believe me.

I told you about high prices. Now, I'll tell you one thing. The mountains are covered with lemon plants there. It's practically the only industry today, there. But now, when you have seen where they live, imagine how much work and money is necessary to make these lemons arrive to the vendor. So, the cost of the production of the lemons is much more higher as in other places, here.

The difference from the other places of the Coast is that there are tourists all the year in Amalfi.

And here we are finally in the central square of Amalfi, in front of it's famous cathedral and staicase.
We normally turn home with the busses that go in the direction of Salerno, and trains than, from Vietri Sul Mare. (Vietri Sul Mare - if You Arrived With a Train There). It's possible to take a bus to Sorrento, but it takes too much time. If you have to turn back to Naples or in any other place from Amalfi, bus to Salerno is the best solution. The other good possibility is the ferry in any direction. But it costs much more. Egs. Amalfi - Salerno €2,20 bus, €8 ferry.
